Holistic Skin Care

This issue contains the second article in a series of four which is submitted by Dina Longo-Hansen, doctor of natural health. She says that when our skin reflects signs of beauty, such as clarity, softness, and firmness it lets us know that our internal organs are working efficiently. If our skin reflects blemishes, sallowness, or fatigue it lets us know our inner organs, emotions or energy is not in harmony and may need attention. Dr. Longo-Hansen is also a holistic skin care specialist and certified Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner. Her private practice is located in Fair Haven, New Jersey as part of Libra Natural Therapy.

Nutrition is a wonderful way to help our skin reflect beauty. We are what we eat. Our skin is largely composed of collagen and elastin, which helps it maintain its form, structure and elasticity. Vitamin C helps the skin produce collagen, vitamin A helps control our skins rate of shedding of dead cells which could lead to dry skin, and vitamin E helps to protect oxidation of vitamin A and vitamin C. Together these vitamins are our antioxidants. Foods high in antioxidants are red, orange, yellow and dark green vegetables and fruits. It is suggested that zinc is also necessary for healthy skin. Zinc is necessarey for the harmonious production of new skin cells at the lower (dermal) layers of the skin, which contains the most amount of newly formed collagen and elastin. Essential fatty acids are also important to our skin's health. Some signals that we are deficient in EFA's are dry flaky skin and hair, cracking nails, fatigue, aching joints, constipation and memory difficulties. We can find essential fatty acids in whole grains, raw unsalted nuts and seeds, beans and legumes.
