Women's Heart Health
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although there have been improvements in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women, it remains the top killer of women in the United States. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health and partner organizations are sponsoring a national campaign. This public awareness campaign is called The Heart Truth.
The campaign's goal is to give women a wake-up call about their risk of heart disease. Although, The Heart Truth is targeted to women ages 40 to 60, it serves as a reminder to all women to take care of their heart. The Heart Truth's Red Dress is the national symbol for women and heart disease. Recommendations range from lifestyle changes such as a heart healthy diet and incorporating physical activity, to the use of specific drugs.
Food for Thought
Sometimes during the dog days of summer we may drink more ice tea/coffee, non-virgin beverages and not enough water. Then we start to get that cramping feeling in our lower pelvis. We wonder if we have a bladder infection. Women just know, after having so many.
Urinary tract infections affect six out of 10 American women. Cranberries are probably best known for their ability to reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections. It is not the acidity of cranberry juice that provide protection but bacteria blocking compounds, proanthocyanidins, in the fruit. According to the Cranberry Institute, researchers found that these flavonoids inhibit certain bacteria from adhering to urinary tract cells and causing infection.
"The heart regulates the flow of blood. The small intestine is the root of the body's constitution, changes food directly into body, which is distributed to the cells by heart." - Mary Burmeister
